Revealed: The most difficult suburbs in Australia to find a rental

As Australia’s rental crisis drags on, new data from MCG Quantity Surveyors’ has revealed the postcodes with the lowest rental listings in December.

“In areas like Greater Sydney and Regional NSW, we’re seeing a significant crunch in available rentals, putting immense pressure on renters,” said Mike Mortlock, Managing Director of MCG Quantity Surveyors.

“Regions like Greater Melbourne and Greater Brisbane, which traditionally have robust rental markets, are showing an alarming decrease in rental listings.”

Here are the suburbs where it’s hardest to find an available rental property.

Greater Sydney

The Sutherland area stood out for its rental scarcity.

The suburb of Oyster Bay, located about 26km south of Sydney’s CBD, had only one rental listed in December.

This is despite having 101 private rentals situated within the area.

Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon is situated halfway between Penrith and Liverpool in Western Sydney.

The suburb advertised just two out of its 115 listed rental properties for lease in December.

Iluka

Located in the Clarence Valley on the NSW Coast, Iluka had only one rental listed in Decemeber.

The regional town, which means “near the sea”, has 115 rental properties all up.

Greater Melbourne

In Victoria, places like the Yarra Ranges are experiencing significant shortages.

The suburb of Upwey, located about 33 kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD, had just one out of 147 rentals available for lease.

Selville East

Another Yarra Ranges suburb that made the top 10 hardest places to rent in Melbourne was Selville East.

For December, the suburb had only three out 245 rentals up for grabs.

Moorabol

Moorabol in Geelong had only one property advertised for rent last month.

The regional Victorian town currently has 102 rental properties within its postcode.

Greater Brisbane

Brisbane areas such as the Ipswich Hinterland are also facing tough times.

Frenches Creek, about an hour’s drive from the capital, had just one out of 208 rentals available to let.

Cornubia

Cornubia in Loganlea made Queensland’s top five hardest places to rent.

Despite 205 rentals recorded in the area, only three were listed for rent last month.
